What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

Very simply, Air Source Heat Pumps take the warmth from the air outside (even when it’s freezing) and use it to heat your home.

Air Source Heat Pump systems heat water which is then circulated around the home via radiators or an underfloor heating system. They can also be used to heat water in a storage tank for the bathroom or kitchen.

With the Government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme you can also qualify for a £7500 contribution towards your Heat Pump installation. We complete the application on your behalf, and the £7500 is automatically deducted from your installation costs!

How does a Heat Pump work?

Air source heat pumps use the same type of technology that keeps your fridge cold, but in reverse. A liquid refrigerant that has a very low boiling point is pumped on a loop between two heat exchangers. This refrigerant takes on heat energy from the outside ambient air temperature and turns into a gas as it warms up. This gas is then compressed back into a liquid, which increases its temperature further. The warm refrigerant then goes through a heat exchanger, which transfers the warmth to a separate body of water for circulating round the central heating system. During the final stage the liquid refrigerant goes through an expansion valve reducing the pressure and temperature and the cycle repeats.

Maintaining Air Source Heat Pumps

A good quality and well installed air or ground source heat pump system will require relatively little maintenance and can be expected to last for at least 20-30 years. Installations require an annual check which will usually include a service to ensure the system's optimal running. The other important factor to consider is that maintaining the a heat pump through regular servicing also ensures that the Manufacturer's Warranty remains in place and is in place to fix larger system issues.

Is my property suitable?

Not every property is suitable for an Air Source Heat Pump. The following considerations are important when deciding whether to go ahead with a Air Source Heat Pump install -

- When your property was built

- If your property has any insulation in the outer walls or roof

- Whether your property has single, double or triple glazed windows

- How many bedrooms your property has

Please do contact us if you want to discuss whether your property would be suitable. We will be more than happy to help you understand if it is or not. We do not, and will not, install an Air Source Heat Pump in any unsuitable property. It is vital that the system works for you, so we will tell you if we feel that it is not suitable.
