What is Solar PV?
Photovoltaic Panels (also known as PV), are panels which are used to generate electricity from them. These are not to be confused with solar water heating systems. The panels that we are referring to would normally be referred to as Solar Panels

Contrary to common belief, Solar PV’s do not necessarily use direct sunlight to function; some light is enough for a Solar PV system to work very efficiently in providing energy for your property. Therefore, an investment in photovoltaics ensures electricity for the building not only from those hot sunny summer days it also provides significant energy requirements during cloudy days and winter months. Solar PV performance is directly correlated and proportional to the amount of light received, hence the stronger the sunlight, the more power will be generated.

How does Solar PV work?
Maintaining Solar PV

The panels are made up of a semi-conductible material, typically silicon. The light shines on the cell to create an electric field. The strength of the sunshine dictates the level of electricity produced, making sure the panels are maximising the sun light by pointing them in the right direction is essential for generating maximum power.
The power is measured in kilowatts peak (kWp). This is the rate at which energy is generated at peak performance, (whilst in direct sunlight). PV cells come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and typically Solar PV is seen on properties in the form of panels, although it is possible to fit solar tiles.

Very little maintenance is required for Solar PV, apart from keeping the panels relatively clean so not to reduce the power they can create. If panels are fitted at 15 degrees or more, they will benefit from the natural cleaning process of regular rainfall. When we fit panels, we leave with you a set of comprehensive guidelines informing you of any maintenance checks that you can carry out from time to time. This is a simple process and ensures everything is working efficiently, helping you to maximise the use of your Solar PV installation.
